Marvel's been on a big diversity kick lately. Perhaps the company's braintrust just decided it was the right thing to do. Or maybe they finally realized that there's a huge, untapped market beyond white male readers.
It began a few years back when Ultimate Spider-Man killed off Peter Parker and replaced him with Miles Morales, a half-Hispanic/half-Black teenager. Then nine-ish months ago, Marvel replaced the Thor we knew with a female incarnation. More recently, the House of Ideas made headlines by announcing A-Force on The View — an all-female team of Avengers that's a Secret Wars tie-in. And after Secret Wars, Logan is being replaced with a female Wolverine.
To keep the diversity train chugging, Marvel just announced the return of its "$1 True Believers" program, which debuted ahead of Secret Wars. These reprints of major events from the past will be sold for a buck to introduce new readers to Marvel Comics.
This second round of True Believers titles will celebrate "Women In Marvel," presenting #1 issues of solo female superhero titles – and one heroine from a galaxy far, far away – from the last year or so. The ten titles include Ms. Marvel #1, She-Hulk #1, Silk #1, Spider-Gwen #1, Spider-Woman #1, Princess Leia #1 and four more.
Set aside some one-dollar bills for these issues, which are set to arrive this September.
