Doppler Labs Smart Earbuds Are Hearing Aids For People Who Can Hear... And More

Some people hear only what they want to hear and there isn't much anyone can do to get through to them. Now, a Kickstarter campaign seeks to empower such individuals with a set of wireless earbuds that block out whatever sounds they would rather not have bouncing down their ear canals.

Doppler Labs is well on its way of reaching its Kickstarter goal of $250,000, earning over $160,000 in backing with just shy of a month left in the campaign. Doppler Labs' Here earbuds are described as music studios made just for the ears. The earbuds are fully wireless and can be controlled via a smartphone or tablet.

"Here has been engineered to give you control of any and all live listening experiences," states the campaign. "Suppress the jet engine on an airplane. Reduce a baby crying. Boost the bass at a club. Live mix a concert by adding reverb. Enhance your senses and personalize every listening experience."

The technology inside of Here is "fundamentally different" than anything that came before it, according to Doppler Labs. The noise isolating earbuds act as filters, blocking out unwanted sounds and relaying a feed of the distilled audio to the ear drums.

"Put simply, earbuds are for listening to recorded audio," states the campaign. "Here buds are for engaging with real world sound."

By July of this year, Doppler Labs hopes to finalize Here's design and will take into account Kickstarter feedback when doing so. Production is set to begin in November of this year and then the first Here units will ship in the following month. That won't be the last the world hears of Here, if all goes as planned and Doppler Labs hold true to its goal of iterating on the earbuds.

"The possibilities of what we can do with a speaker, microphone, and computer in your ear are limitless, from using voice as an input modality and speech as an output modality to transforming the fundamentals of human communication."

While the Kickstarter campaign is moving fast, there's still time to take advantage of the Early Bird Special and lay claim to a pair of Here earbuds before their retail price is established. Pledges of $179 or more rewards backers with a set of Here earbuds and early supporters have only reserved about half of what Doppler Labs is offering.
