Games With Gold For June Include 'Just Cause 2' And Double Fine's 'Massive Chalice'

Hot on the heels of Sony's free PS Plus game announcement, Microsoft is firing back with its own batch of free games for the month of June.

Xbox 360 owners can snag two very different titles next month in the form of first-person stealth title Thief and the over-the-top open-world adventure Just Cause 2. You can download Just Cause 2 starting June 1 up through June 15, just in time for Just Cause 3's (possible) release later this year. Thief will then be available free of charge for the remainder of the month.

Those playing on Xbox One get the short end of the deal, with only one new game going free. PoolNation FX carries over as the free game from last month — so if you have yet to download it and play virtual pool, you will have another month to do so.

More exciting is the inclusion of Double Fine's Massive Chalice. Originally funded through Kickstarter, Massive Chalice is a quirky strategy game that includes a unique genealogy system. Players make alliances and arrange marriages in order to carry on the family name and create new warriors to step up when the older heroes are ready to retire. The game has been available on PC for some time, but will be making its console debut on Xbox One.

If you are an Xbox Live gold subscriber and have yet to download May's free games, you are almost out of time. On Xbox 360, you can pick up F1 2013, while Xbox One owners can pick up a copy of Castlestorm: Definitive Edition.

Microsoft's lineup isn't quite as impressive as Sony's, which includes four free games playable on the PlayStation 4 as well as two free PlayStation 3 games. Microsoft doubled down on their free games for the month of April, but it looks like that was a one-month only deal.

Coupled with the fact that Xbox One owners only get one free game per month, it's hard not to feel like PlayStation gamers are getting the better deal, as we break down in our PS Plus vs. Xbox Live Gold comparison.
