Update: The original article mentioned that this Volvo had self-parking features that caused the accident. A spokesperson from Volvo reached out to us to clarify the details in this video. The car was, in fact, not a self-driving or self-parking car. It was driven by a human, and the vehicle did not have the Pedestrian Detection feature. This is a Volvo safety feature designed to identify pedestrians and apply a vehicle's brakes.
Instead, the vehicle was fitted with a "City Safety" feature, which aids driver safety in heavy city traffic by helping to avoid rear-end collisions by detecting other vehicles, not pedestrians. Again, the company clarified that this was simply a case of human error and nothing was wrong with the car itself.
That's from a tech demonstration held by Volvo in the Dominican Republic. The car has a 'City Safe' mode which can help avoid rear-end collisions under a certain speed, but it does not have the company's Pedestrian Detection feature.
According to Volvo (via WTOP), the accident was due to human error.
