Popping open the champagne bottle across the bow of the Editions series, Google teamed up with electronic dance music producer and DJ Skrillex to launch the first "live" phone case in the all-new line.
The search engine company will team up with other musicians to bring more live cases to the Editions line soon.
The first batch of the limited edition Android cases, which start at $40, come in the three designs inspired by Skrillex and his love for space. Google launched the Editions line to help Android users express themselves through their mobile hardware, according to a blog post from Kari Clark, senior manager of Google Accessories.
"We spend a lot of time with our phones every day," stated Clark. "They're essential to how we communicate and for many users, an extension of our style."
"We think that means your phone—and its accessories—deserve to be as interesting as you are. So we decided to seek out some of the world's top artists to make that happen."
The live cases will bring a new button to Android devices. The button, found on the backs of the cases, links to Skrillex's YouTube feed, though it can be reprogrammed to carry out another function such as launching a browser or camera.
Perhaps the most intriguing feature of Skrillex's live cases is the live wallpapers. The live wallpapers will update throughout the day, refreshing to display free screen feed to it from a satellite, which is named "Nanou" after Skrillex's dog, launched just for the live cases.
"We let our little baby Nanou up into the stratosphere on little balloons—he flew away," said Skrillex. "We waved bye to him and he's up there right now, all by himself taking photos of the earth. Who knows, maybe he'll even run into something unexplained. Hopefully, he'll run into some UFOs."
During the day, owners of the Skrillex live cases will see images of Earth shot from the stratosphere, and at night, the live wallpapers will display constellations based on the user's location.
It's "pretty, si-si-sick," said Skrillex in the short video documenting the satellite's launch. Check out the video below:
