Want A 'Witcher' Movie? Well There Already Was One In 2001

Here's a bit of trivia for fans of The Witcher: before the series became a video game, there was actually a movie based on the original source material.

That's right, Geralt of Rivia was first imagined by author Andrzej Sapkowski in the 1980s book series, and in 2001, a movie based on those books, called Wiedźmin (which translates to Witcher in Polish), came out.

The film's English title was The Hexer and featured the story as we know it from the video games, following the adventures of Geralt of Rivia.

According to IGN, though, the 2001 film was originally intended as a television series, but someone decided that it should become a film, so the studio compressed its 13 episodes into a movie that didn't make a lot of sense, meaning that it didn't do so well with critics and audiences.

However, the director of the series, Marek Brodzki, still released those 13 episodes the next year, showing a finished product that made more sense than the film. However, the show still ended after that one season, with the title of the last episode called "Ciri," a name familiar to those video gamers now delving into the world of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Another bit of trivia for you: did you know The Witcher was also a comic book series that ran from 1993 to 1995? It also became a tabletop game before CD Projekt Red discovered the story and brought it to life with the first The Witcher video game in 2007, followed by a second game in 2011.

This week saw the release of the final game in the trilogy, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has already seen record-breaking sales and critical acclaim.

"Not only do you care about the characters and want to see how their stories end, but you want to scour every inch of The Witcher 3's glorious game world," writes Digital Spy. "It's a world you want to get lost in, a world where fast travel is an afterthought and a world you want to keep exploring in case there's something you've missed."

One cannot help but wonder when Hollywood will grasp on to the concept of The Witcher and give it the movie trilogy or television series that it deserves.
