Let's be honest: through the years, Adult Swim has released some trippy stuff. While the late-night cartoon block was originally dedicated to more traditional animated series, the brand has changed pretty significantly over the past several years. While few will argue that shows like Space Ghost: Coast to Coast and Sealab 2021 were conventional, they look downright normal compared to series like Squidbillies and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
From the look of things, that's not about to change anytime soon. While most of the buzz surrounding virtual reality tech has to do with gaming, it appears that Adult Swim will start pushing for VR animation. In fact, the studio's already started working on its first VR piece, titled The Virtual Brainload. If you're looking for something akin a virtual acid trip, Adult Swim has you covered.
While the full piece won't be unveiled until later today, Adult Swim did reveal a short, 30-second preview:
Even without a virtual reality headset, The Virtual Brainload is just as trippy as the rest of Adult Swim's lineup... which means it'll only get more intense with a proper VR setup.
It's a strange move for a company that's usually more about off-kilter jokes than truly abstract pieces, but Jill King – one of Turner Broadcasting's senior VPs – has a lot of confidence in the short (via Mashable):
"Given the success of our digital brand extensions... it only makes sense that we pilot a virtual reality experience. We know that Adult Swim fans are early adopters. Virtual reality will allow our fans to become immersed in an entirely new way, while also demonstrating a commitment to innovation to our business partners."
At three minutes long, The Virtual Brainload isn't the longest VR experience out there... then again, with this level of psychedelic imagery, perhaps that's a good thing. The full version will be compatible with any and all Android-based VR devices (such as Google Cardboard) — meaning you won't have to shell out for an Oculus development kit just to watch the short.
The full-length version of The Virtual Brainload hits the Google Play Store on May 18.
