Google busy shoring up Gmail features just as web mail service enjoys its 10th birthday

Google is known for innovations in online search, its continual stream of new apps and, of course, its creative home page illustrations.

But the search titan is also known for creating something new and eventually pushing it to the side, or even tanking the innovation, as it forges ahead to create even something more amazing. The latest app closed-down list includes Google Schemer and Google's free Notifier app. And does anyone remember Google Buzz? Not likely as it barely lasted a year before being packed away and discontinued.

But now and then Google quietly moves forward on its products and services and this time it's supposedly Gmail, according to a report.

The report states the focus is on making Gmail easier, simpler, more intuitive and will include an effort to charge up the web email's 'group' capabilities.

Reportedly designers are drafting new features such as the ability to 'pin' a message at the top of the inbox and letting a 'read' email 'snooze' for a pre-set time. Once an alarm chimes the email then appears at the top of the inbox. The report also claims Gmail will boast three more email sorting categories, travel/purchase/finance for a total of seven.

The news comes as Google is enticing users to delve into Google+ and use more Google apps and services in the business environment.

App improvement is always a good thing, but it is a bit peculiar that Google has waited so long to shore up its popular 10-year-old email service.

In a quest to find out more about reported new features, TechTimes tapped the Gmail blog at Google. Not much luck as the latest post dates to 2008.

So we jumped over to the official Google blog, but again no luck.

Then, like most users needing information, we did a Google search of the Google blog and latest Gmail news. The most current revelation cited was the announcement made last month regarding the inception of new attachment capabilities and that Google will be using encrypted HTTPS connection to protect messages.

A few more searches indicates that one of the last big Gmail transformations may have been back in October, 2012 when Google announced a new layout format. Or maybe it's last May's announcement Google was taking a merged storage approach across Gmail, Google Drive and Google+.

As of January 2014, Gmail did get a new feature that allows users to send emails to those who have Google+ accounts even if they don't have each other's email.

Whatever new Gmail innovations are in the works it bodes comforting news to Gmail lovers in that it's more than likely Gmail is here to stay and will only get better in time.
