As Samsung gets ready to officially release its flagship Galaxy S5 on April 11, we're now learning more about the company's plans for its miniature counterpart, Galaxy S5 mini (SM-G800).
Samsung has started two trends in the smartphone world that have been a resounding success. The company saw early on that small tablets were going to be big, so it decided to converge a smartphone and small-sized tablet by introducing the Galaxy Note in 2011. Tech critics and reviewers were quick to dismiss the very large (at that time) 5.3-inch display smartphone, claiming consumers would not want to carry or use such a giant-sized phone. Samsung proved the critics wrong and watched sales of the original Galaxy Note soar; instantly creating a new category in the mobile world with the "phablet."
Samsung's Galaxy Note phablet line has grown and attracted rivals like the HTC One max, LG G Pro 2, and even Samsung's long-time rival is expected to join the phablet party with a 5.5-inch iPhone 6 later this year. Samsung has sold over 50 million Galaxy Note smartphones since 2011 and that number will keep rising. But while the company went big with the Galaxy Note it decided to go in the opposite direction with the Galaxy S3 Mini released in November 2012.
The Galaxy S3 Mini shared a similar design to the Galaxy S3 but in a more compact size. Samsung followed up by releasing the Galaxy S4 Mini in July 2013, and now the company's unannounced Galaxy S5 mini's specs have leaked.
According to a new report from SamMobile, Samsung is preparing to launch the Galaxy S5 mini in the next few months and the site has leaked the smartphone's specs.
Samsung will reportedly use a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display with 720p resolution, which is a nice upgrade over the Galaxy S4 Mini's 4.3-inch 540 x 960 display. The handset will likely be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset and 1.5GB of RAM. It will run Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box and Samsung's new version of TouchWiz that will ship with the Galaxy S5.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini will include an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front facing camera for video chat and selfies. The smartphone is expected to ship with 16GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot that will support up to 64GB microSD cards.
The site also claims the Galaxy S5 mini will be water-resistant like the Galaxy S5, use the same IR blaster to turn the smartphone into a universal remote control and will be packing a removable 2,100 mAh battery.
Pricing and an exact release date have not been disclosed, but the smartphone will likely ship in June. Check back at TechTimes as we'll keep you up to date on the Galaxy S5 mini as more information becomes available.
