We've seen hints of Gorilla Grodd as a villain on The CW's The Flash since the first season's early episodes, but it won't be until this week that we finally get our first good look at the character.
This will also be the first episode when we see Grodd finally speak, and The CW has released a new sneak peek video showing us Grodd having a frightening conversation with Detective Joe West.
"I mean it's one thing to stare at Captain Cold in the face and his gun and have a fear of that but at least he's human," says Jesse L. Martin, the actor who portrays West, in an interview with TV Fanatic. "He's susceptible to a bullet or pain but when you talk about a character like Grodd, it gets established that Joe doesn't even really like normal gorillas let alone an eight-foot-tall, telepathic, supernatural gorillas."
Grodd is one of the most popular villains in The Flash comics, a super intelligent telepathic gorilla with superpowers that lets him affect the minds of others. It seems his origin story is a little different in the TV series than in the comics because here, he's been set up as a creation of Dr. Harrison Wells, who we've since learned is actually Eobard Thawne, aka Reverse Flash, the man responsible for the death of Barry Allen's mom..
In this upcoming episode, Allen and his team are on the hunt for Wells, but it looks like they come across something they didn't bargain for: Gorilla Grodd. In the comics, Grodd lives on the surface among humans in Central City and becomes popular with them, even running for political office. Of course, he has far more malevolent plans for humans, which The Flash uncovers and stops.
How Grodd plays out on the TV series, though, is anyone's guess, although we're thinking that he's being set up as the number one big baddie for season two of the series (especially since season one has already gone through a lot of the most popular villains from The Flash comic books).
The Flash episode "Grodd" airs tonight on The CW.
