Is LEGO Just A Toy? 'A LEGO Brickumentary' Seeks To Find Out

Late last year, LEGO became the biggest toy company in the world. Meaning the Danish manufacturer of plastic bricks has overtaken everyone, from age-old stalwarts like Hasbro and Mattel to newer heavyweights like Spinmaster.

Its rise to domination is owed to more than just the kids who exercise their imaginations every day by building whatever they can dream up.

The LEGO Movie, the ever-popular video games, LEGO artists like Nathan Sawaya, "remade in LEGO" fan-films - these things and much more have proven that there's something inherent in those little bricks that appeals to people of all ages.

A new documentary from Radius — the production company behind Snowpiercer, Horns, the Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour, and Only God Forgives — charts the culture of all things LEGO. Officially sanctioned by The LEGO Group, A LEGO Brickumentary examines the influence of LEGO bricks all over the world, including AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO), famous LEGO fans, LEGO conventions and much more, all in attempt to understand how this toy epitomizes the human drive to create.

The first trailer for the movie has just been released, and you can watch it right here:

The film was made by a pair of celebrated documentary directors who teamed up for the first time. Daniel Junge, director of more than fifteen documentaries, is best known as the Academy Award-winning filmmaker behind HBO's Saving Face. Kief Davidson is an Academy Award nominee for his documentary Open Heart, and describes A LEGO Brickumentary as "a childhood dream come true."

Narrated by Jason Bateman, A LEGO Brickumentary will be in theaters and available on-demand on July 31, 2015.
