Microsoft HoloLens is the next-hottest thing to come out of Build 2015, and from what we can tell, it is going to play an enormous role in entertainment and where video games are concerned.
At the conference, Microsoft announced that it has partnered with Unity Technologies, the company behind the Unity game engine. This means developers will be able to create games for HoloLens that will not require the likes of the Xbox One.
We suspect players would just download a particular video game from the store and play right away with the headset on. Chances are, it would involve a lot of waving fingers and hands, so games that rely solely on HoloLens might not be the way to go.
"Expanding our relationship with Unity Technologies was a natural next step in bringing content to Microsoft HoloLens," said Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft Xbox boss. "We are very excited to unveil this partnership and look forward to the possibilities it will open for developers creating experiences for Microsoft HoloLens."
As the weeks and months go by, we expect Microsoft to announce new partnerships where gaming is concerned. We are looking forward to the software giant showcasing new titles for Xbox One and PC with HoloLens support at E3 2015. It's the perfect spot to sell the idea of gaming with this new device, and we doubt Microsoft would want to miss out on the opportunity.
To be honest, while we are excited to see what developers will come up with, our faith in Augmented Reality gaming isn't high. We believe Virtual Reality is more suited for this role, while AR is best used for apps and other entertainment aspects outside of video games.
However, should we see a compelling demo that highlights why we should get excited about playing video games with HoloLens, then our tune will no doubt change. Until then, it is best to sit on the fence for a while to see what Microsoft is capable of delivering with this awesome-looking piece of technology.
