After news reports last week claiming that the Galaxy S4 Mini would not be receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, it is now confirmed that the update will indeed be released for the device.
Last week, a report based upon a tweet from UK carrier Three brought bad news to owners of the Samsung S4 Mini. The carrier stated that the device would not be receiving an Android 5.0 Lollipop update and that it had been cancelled by the carrier and Samsung due to memory limitations.
"There's no plans for Lollipop for the S4 Mini due to memory limitation," tweeted the customer support team for Three. Later, in response to another tweet which asked if the company was sure about this as Samsung had already confirmed the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for all S4 variants, the carrier reiterated, "Yes, we've received confirmation from Samsung that this is due to a memory limitation with this device."
This was disappointing news not only for customers of the UK carrier but for all Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini customers around the world. No carrier has released the S4 Mini Android 5.0 Lollipop update as of yet, and it appeared as if the memory limitations claimed by carrier would naturally apply to all S4 Minis around the globe. The S4 Mini contains 8 GB of internal memory and 1.5 GB RAM.
Fortunately, it appears that this was a mistake, as soon afterwards the Irish subsidiary of Three, Three Ireland, tweeted that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update was in fact approved for the S4 Mini: "... good news, that update has been approved and has started to roll out so you should receive it in the coming weeks."
It appears as if there was a massive miscommunication as the device for the UK did not pass initial testing but will in fact be receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, as will the Irish version and all Galaxy S4 Mini devices at some point.
