Try DIY Remedies For Earth Day

It's Earth Day! There's no better time to skip the store and pricey products when you can whip up natural treatments on your own, at home. Not only will you save money while reducing your carbon footprint, you'll rest assured knowing exactly what's going on and in your body.

Here, we've got two recipes to cover you from head to toe.

Treat your feet after a long day. According to the pros at Nutiva, the makers of organic superfood products such as coconut oil, hemp protein, chia seeds and more, blending this mix of coconut oil, shea butter and peppermint essential oil will revitalize tired feet.

First, you'll need 2 tablespoons of Nutiva Organic Coconut Oil, 5 tablespoons of shea butter and 40 drops of peppermint essential oil. Warm the coconut oil and shea butter in a double boiler over low heat, being careful not to fully melt the oil and butter. Heat only until they are easily incorporated, then place in a bowl. Using an electric mixer set on a low speed, blend for an additional 1-2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula to eliminate any clumps in the final product. Increase the beater's speed to medium for several minutes until the mixture thickens and is buttery. Continue scraping the sides of the bowl. Finally, add the essential oil and blend about 5 to 6 additional minutes. Transfer to a wide-mouth container like a mason jar to make it easier to scoop. Peppermint oil adds a refreshing, tingling sensation. For a calming effect, swap the peppermint oil for a lavender essential oil.

Or, using what's most likely already in your kitchen, make a nourishing hair mask to add hydration to dry or stressed hair, leaving it stronger and with extra shine.

Barbara Farnworth, celebrity hair expert, specializes in natural remedies learned in her native England and recommends this version. Combine an organic egg (protein-rich), half a cup of milk (to soften hair), a shot of apple cider vinegar (eliminates excess oils for a healthy scalp) and a tablespoon of olive oil (to hydrate, nourish and rejuvenate). Whisk together. Apply the mixture to the scalp and through the hair; leave for 30 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and do a final cleanse with an organic shampoo.
