Can you really play games on a device on your wrist that has a screen that's barely more than one square inch in size? Apparently, you can.
In the Apple Watch App Store, you'll find a section devoted just to games. Inside, you'll find over 100 games made for Apple Watch and available for early adopters to download immediately. Some are free, some are not, but there's something for everyone. Here are some of our early favorites.
Puzzle Games
Puzzle lovers have several choices on Apple Watch:
- BoxPop tasks you with popping boxes on a grid in a specific pattern.
- XO is a simple game of tic-tac-toe for your wrist that you can play against other humans or against the game itself.
- A unique, modern take on something akin to tic-tac-toe is what you'll find with Tapatan.
- Get your Sudoku fix in a hurry with Just Sudoku Free.
- A Few Billion Square Tiles is Minesweeper for Apple Watch, with the added twist of multiplayer thrown in.
For word puzzle fans, you have some nice choices.
- Snappy Word should scratch your itch nicely. It presents you a grid of four letters, which you tap rapidly to form a four-letter word.
- Or, you can try Three for the same concept as Snappy Word, with just three letters, in a nice, attractive package.
- Letterpad is built on the same basic principle, but its grid has nine letters and you get a hint as to the specific word you're looking for.
- 4 Words 1 Diff presents a list of four words, three of which have something in common and one that doesn't belong.
- Letter Zap gives you a jumble of letters and asks you to unscramble them in 30 seconds or less.
Trivia Games
The Trivia genre has seen a real boost lately thanks to popular games like Trivia Crack, the undoubted champion.
- Trivia Crack has a full-featured Apple Watch version available now, and it's one of the best-looking Watch games we've seen so far.
- Another popular iPhone trivia game, Elementary Minute, is now available for Apple Watch, but it isn't able to support the swipe-to-answer mechanic of the original game.
- Rufus is pretty cute too, if not simple — but it's free.
Memory Games and Brain Training
You know those games where you have a grid of cards, and you flip them over, and try to match the pictures on the back? There are loads of those.
- Our favorites are Brain Fruit, Duck Duck Go!, and Maiden Voyage.
- For your daily brain training exercises, the stylish Rules! is excellent thanks to its daily puzzles that help increase your brain power.
- Peak is also terrific, with a wide variety of puzzles to increase your intellect, retention, language, focus and other mental abilities.
Adventure Games and RPGs
- Fans of traditional RPGs should enjoy Runeblade, with its Medieval story and turn-based action.
- Anime-inspired Watch Quest also grabbed our attention, even though it's made up mostly of mini puzzle games.
- For a trip outside the box, try Spy_Watch, which wants you to manage a spy agency and guide your secret agents to success.
- Interested in a little more story to your adventure? Lifeline... presents a harrowing survival story in a branching format.
- On the flipside, if you'd rather not get bogged down in story and just hunt for loot, Best Fiends is the game for you.
Card Games
- Blackjack Anywhere is by far the best of the blackjack games currently available.
- For poker fanatics, we like Video Poker a lot, and we hear Perfect Video Poker is very good, too.
Virtual Pets
If you're looking for a little companion who fits on your wrist and will always be loyal to you, we recommend a virtual pet game.
- Hatchi takes the old-school approach, with monochrome, pixelated visuals.
- Popular adventure game Battle Camp has a new companion app for Apple Watch that allows you to care for a virtual pet from the main game.
- The original, classic Tamagotchi is available for Apple Watch, too.
