Apple iOS 7 adoption up to 85 pct as iOS 6 usage slips

Many users do not like and even complained about iOS 7 since Apple launched it in September last year. The new look is seen by many as too bright and too cartoony and a number of users even reported that the parallax effect of the updated operating system causes motion sickness. Some users also complained of their device suddenly becoming slow and the battery draining more easily.

Nonetheless, it appears that majority of users have upgraded to iOS 7 anyway as Apple updated its support page for developers with the latest iOS adoption numbers that show most of the Apple devices that lately accessed the App Store are now running on iOS 7.

The adoption metric, which was based on usage of the App Store for seven days ending March 23, showed that 85 percent of Apple devices have already been updated to iOS 7. Twelve percent, on the other hand, are using iOS 6 and 3 percent are still running on iOS 5 or older.

The current iOS distribution showed a 2 percent increase of devices using iOS 7 from the last metric covering seven days ending March 9 albeit the number has been climbing since the update was released. Apple first reported in December that 74 percent of the devices run what was then the latest iOS version. The number climbed to 80 percent in late January and then to 83 percent in February.

Although many users are dissatisfied with iOS 7, many decided to update their devices possibly because the features and app optimization and with most devices now running on iOS 7, app developers will likely focus on developing apps optimized to this version. Notably, it also seems that Apple currently includes the number of devices running on iOS 7.1, which was released earlier this month, to the iOS 7 category.

Apple is expected to announce some details about its next iOS update at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which will be held in San Francisco in June but the iOS 8 is speculated not to have as much major changes as the iOS 7.
