One of the cool things about Google's Android platform is it can run on just about any device, whether it's a smartphone, tablet, laptop, smartwatch, or even projector.
AT&T announced that it will be selling the ZTE Spro 2 smart projector starting Friday, April 24. The Android KitKat-powered video and image projector, which actually doubles as a mobile hotspot, will be available for $500 off contract and $400 with a two-year agreement with AT&T.
ZTE debuted the Spro 2 earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Barcelona, Spain as a device targeted toward both business users for work presentations and personal consumers for various purposes such as movie nights with friends.
As a first-of-its-kind smart projector, the Spro 2 can project up to 120 inches of videos and images at 200 lumens with an auto-focus and auto keystone feature that automatically corrects any image projected to be rectangular when the projector is tilted on its stand.
Users can store up to 16GB of content into the Spro 2's built-in storage, but ZTE also added a microSD port for an additional 64GB of space, and USB and HDMI ports for projecting content from other sources.
The smart projector also features a five-inch 720p touchscreen where users can access the Google Play Store to download streaming apps such as Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu and project the streaming content. With dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and 4G LTE integrated right into the device, users can also do other things on the web, such as play games, check email, and surf the web.
As a mobile hotspot, the Spro 2 can connect up to 10 different devices at a time to AT&T's 4G LTE network. It has a large 6,300 mAh battery that ZTE says can project up to two and a half hours of video or allow up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi connection. The Spro 2 can also serve as a power bank to charge devices.
The ZTE Spro 2 will only be available via AT&T, but ZTE is said to be in talks with other wireless carriers to sell its smart projector. The Chinese telecommunications company is also said to be planning to sell the Spro 2 in the U.S. direct from its own stores and other e-commerce websites.
