Astronaut's 'Star Trek' Selfie From Space Gives Us Hope

Star Trek has inspired more than a few astronauts over the years. Who hasn't wanted to explore the cosmos like Captain Kirk?

Not all of us, however, have the extraordinary drive, dedication and skills required to make the journey into space.

Thankfully, we have people like Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti to take up the cause. She's currently aboard the International Space Station — which just so happens to be the best place to take a Star Trek-inspired selfie.

She's wearing an officer uniform taken straight out of the Star Trek: Voyager television series. Voyager just so happens to star a female captain by the name of Kathryn Janeway — who shares a rank with Cristoforetti.

As for the actual subject of the tweet, Cristoforetti is drawing attention to a shipment of coffee that arrived on the ISS last week, courtesy of the SpaceX "Dragon" freighter. The freighter brought a new type of coffeemaker (dubbed the ISSpresso) to the space station so that Cristoforetti and the rest of the ISS crew could enjoy some no doubt much-needed caffeine. Turns out making coffee in space isn't quite as simple as making it down here on Earth — hence the special equipment.

Cristoforetti is currently participating in the station's "Futura" mission, serving as a flight engineer. She is expected to return to Earth in May. In the meantime — expect more awesome space selfies.
