OnePlus has just released an invitation to an April 20 event where a special announcement is expected to be made. While this will coincide roughly with the first birthday of the company's OnePlus One smartphone, what the announcement will be for is currently unknown.
Initial thoughts purport the announcement would be for the successor of the OnePlus One, but that is not entirely certain.
OnePlus posted the image of the invitation through its Twitter account, along with the caption "From here on out, anything could happen." The caption actually made the contents of the announcement on April 20 more mysterious, as it could be something entirely different from what most would expect.
The successor to the OnePlus One, which has been logically dubbed OnePlus Two, is still the likely announcement on April 20. The smartphone is rumored to have a 5.5-inch screen—albeit the resolution is still unknown—a 16MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP front-facing camera. The OnePlus Two is also believed to be packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and powered by a massive 3,300mAh battery.
There is also the possibility that the announcement could be something entirely different. Earlier in the month, OnePlus released a teaser for an announcement that was widely believed to be for a kind of gaming device. However, the company went against most expectations and instead revealed that it would be releasing a drone. Because of this gimmick, it is now thought that the upcoming announcement of OnePlus, where it is expected to unveil the OnePlus Two, could be an announcement for something else, perhaps a wearable device, a tablet, or a new kind of smartphone altogether.
In a recent exchange with Bloomberg, OnePlus teased that it could be introducing two new devices in 2015, which could be the OnePlus Two and a cheaper version of the smartphone. The OnePlus Two could have a release date some time during the year's third quarter, with the cheaper version expected to be released right before the year ends, according to OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei.
Pei also said that the company is currently searching for venture capital funding to further expand OnePlus' business.
Whatever the announcement on April 20 would be, the wait will not be that long. Whether it would be for the OnePlus Two or an entirely different device, it will mark the continuing growth of the promising company.
