It was announced in November that Michelle MacLaren would direct the upcoming Wonder Woman, but it appears that the hunt is on again for somebody who can film the superheroine movie. MacLaren has already exited as director of the project.
In a statement, Warner Bros. revealed that it was creative difference that has prompted MacLaren, who has directed episodes of The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Better Call Saul, to drop out.
"Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together," Warner Bros. said.
The movie is scheduled for release on June 23, 2017. The studio is in pre-production. How MacLaren's departure will affect the project and the scheduled release of the film still remains uncertain.
Warner is on the process of locking other roles for the movie. Test offers were reportedly to be offered to four actors for one of the film's male leads on Monday.
Wonder Woman was supposed to be MacLaren's feature directorial debut. She was hired after Warner spent months searching for a female director for the project.
The particular differences that resulted in MacLaren exiting the project are not known, but the incident echoes an instance in 2011 when director Patty Jenkins and Marvel also split. When the two hit an impasse, the movie was turned over to Alan Taylor and eventually became Thor: The Dark World.
Wonder Woman centers on a DC Comics-derived superheroine, with a number of writers working on the scripts of the project. MacLaren was known to have been heavily involved in the development of those scripts.
The movie is set to feature Gal Gadot as the superheroine known for her tiara and golden lasso. Gadot will reportedly sport no fewer than six new looks for the movie, which include a dive suit and the more classic Wonder Woman suit.
The actress is also set to appear in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie, which is scheduled for release on March 25, 2016 as well as in the Justice League movies. Gadot's movie will give the Wonder Woman character more exposure prior to the release of Justice League movies.
