Apple has released iOS 8.3, which boasts a number of new features and bug fixes. Unfortunately, however, it seems as though the company introduced a new bug to the iPhone.
Users are reporting that, after upgrading to iOS 8.3, they are unable to use Touch ID to make App Store purchases.
"Post 8.3 update my Touch ID is working in unlock screen but I'm not being asked for my Touch ID in app/iTunes Store, just being asked to type in password," said one user on an Apple support forum. "I didn't change any settings."
The problem persists when users toggle Touch ID on and off, and it appears as though the bug continues to be a problem even after a factory reset. Not only that, but affected users are being asked if they have enabled Touch ID when making App Store purchases and are being prompted to enter their Apple ID when making these purchases regardless of whether or not that have Touch ID enabled.
It seems as though other uses of Touch ID are not afflicted by the problem and that users are still able to use Touch ID to unlock their devices and to use Apple Pay.
It's important to note that users are not totally barred from making App Store purchases, and instead of making purchases through Touch ID, users can still make purchases by typing in their password.
This is not the first time that Apple has had problems with an iOS update. Most recently, users who upgraded to iOS 8.0.1 found themselves unable to use Touch ID at all. Not only that, but they were also unable to connect to cellular service and even Wi-Fi. Apple quickly recalled the update, and many users were stuck having to connect their phone to iTunes in order to download a patch to the update.
Apart from this bug, iOS 8.3 brings a number of new features and bug fixes. Perhaps the biggest change in the operating system is in the emoji keyboard, enabling users to make use of a number of more diverse emoji with a variety of skin tones and ethnicities. The update also allows users to connect to Apple's CarPlay wirelessly, rather than having to connect through a lighting cable, as was previously the case.
Another important new feature in the operating system is the new iCloud Photo Library, which enables users to view all of their photos synced through iCloud from the new Photos app on OS X.
