After years and years of crafting some of the best shows on television, it's hard to imagine HBO releasing anything less than amazing.
Game of Thrones continues to break records for the company, while a legacy of dramas like The Newsroom and Boardwalk Empire cement the network's status as one of the best in the business.
The idea of HBO working on a crime drama was never that far-fetched, but it's an idea that's been done a million times before...and yet, HBO always managed to keep True Detective feeling fresh.
It was clear that the show wasn't just a retread of the countless other cop dramas available on other channels: this was a police story, but told with the style and flair of HBO. Needless to say, it was a hit.
Now, with the second season fast approaching, HBO is starting to show off a bit more of the show's news story.
It may feature a new cast of characters in a new town, but the season two teaser proves that this is still True Detective.
Those hoping for a lot of dialogue and exposition might be disappointed by the trailer's strict no-dialogue approach - save for the soundtrack, there isn't a single word spoken throughout the entire teaser. It's radically different from most trailers nowadays, as most studios seem to think that the entire movie needs to be explained in less than a minute. With True Detective, however, that's clearly not the case - and it's a lot better off for it.
Instead of dialogue, viewers are treated to some truly gorgeous cinematography. Even without the story to carry it, True Detective's second season already looks beautiful, with some fantastic camera work and editing on full display. There's just enough here for fans to understand what's going on in each scene, and yet, there's not enough for the trailer to spoil anything. It's a near-perfect trailer, and even those who missed the first season will be excited for True Detective's return.
Plus, Colin Farrell's mustache is a standout.
That being said, there's still a little while longer before the series returns to television: True Detective's second season begins on June 21.
