Recently, Comixology held a huge sale on their Marvel titles. Today, the company released the results of that sale, including the top 10-selling digital comics during that time period.
What makes this list so incredible, though, has nothing to do with how well the sale went, but how well-received certain comics were, particularly those with a female lead.
So how did female-led comics do? During the sale, the top 10 favorites included seven titles led by female characters. For those doing the math, that's 70 percent of the top 10.
1. Silk #1
2. Star Wars #2
3. Darth Vader #1
4. Star Wars #1
5. Ms. Marvel #12
6. Ms. Marvel #11
7. Ms. Marvel #10
8. Thor #5
9. Ms. Marvel #9
10. Thor #4
This comes at a time when controversy still surrounds female-led comics. When Marvel announced that Thor would be taken over by a woman in the Thor comics, many fans of the series threw a fit and even accused the company of pandering to a demographic who didn't really appreciate comics (yes, some people actually said things like that).
Of course, Marvel and the female Thor proved everyone wrong. That comic outsold its predecessor male Thor titles by nearly 30 percent. It turns out that there is, apparently, a market for female superhero comic books, as well as a female version of Thor. And you'll notice that in Comixology's sale, Thor takes two places in the top 10.
So for those who criticize Marvel for "pandering" to a female demographic, it seems that Marvel is in the right here. Encouraged by sales, Marvel also has a new title planned based on an all-female version of the Avengers, too.
"We've purposefully assembled a team composed of very different characters - from disparate parts of the Marvel U, with very different power sets, identities and ideologies," said G. Willow Wilson about the new female Avengers title. "They'll all have to come together to answer some big questions: What would you sacrifice to succeed? What is being a hero worth?"
There are other lesser-known titles out there featuring female leads that are just as good as anything Marvel and DC put out. You can check out a few of those comics here.
