Microsoft has announced the Surface 2 AT&T 4G LTE will be available for purchase through Microsoft stores and Best Buy on March 18 for $679.
When Microsoft announced the Surface and Surface Pro tablets in 2012, the company was taking a two-pronged approach in the rapidly growing tablet market. Microsoft billed the Surface RT as an iPad rival, as it ran a stripped down mobile version of Windows 8 called Windows RT, which can only run applications purchased through Microsoft's app store. The Surface Pro was designed to offer users a tablet that ran the full desktop version of Windows 8 and the millions of applications available for the operating system.
Microsoft followed up with the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 last year and it has just announced that the Surface 2 AT&T 4G LTE will be available through the company's online and retail stores, and will also be available from Best Buy.
"Today we're announcing Surface 2 (AT&T 4G LTE), a 64GB mobile broadband-ready version of Surface 2 that will be available to purchase for $679 USD (ERP) in the US at Microsoft retail stores, www.MicrosoftStore.com and at BestBuy.com and all Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores beginning tomorrow, March 18. In launching this new version of Surface 2, we're adding the power and reach of AT&T's 4G LTE network to an already fantastic device. Along with cellular connectivity, all of the refinements that went into Surface 2 are here: the increased speed and battery life, the dual-position kickstand, Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 RT and Outlook 2013 RT, the full HD screen, the upgraded front- and rear-facing cameras and full-size USB 3.0 port, just to name a few.", said Panos Panay, Microsoft's corporate vice president in charge of Surface.
The Surface 2 AT&T 4G LTE features a 10.6-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD display with a pixel density of 208 pixels per inch (ppi). The tablet ships with 64GB of internal storage that is expandable thanks to an included microSD expansion slot that will support up to 64GB microSD cards. It's powered by a 1.7GHz quad-core Tegra 4 processor, GeForce GPU, and 2GB of RAM.
Its camera capabilities include a 5-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, and the ability to record 1080p video @ 30fps, and a front facing 3.5-megapixel camera for video chat. Its wireless connectivity options consist of a 4G LTE radio (for AT&T's network), Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.0. The tablet also has a USB 3.0 port and battery life of up to 10 hours.
The Surface 2 AT&T 4G LTE will be available through Microsoft's online and retail stores, as well as Best Buy on March 18 for $679.
