Owners of the HTC One M8 smartphone in the AT&T network should expect the rollout of the much-anticipated Android 5.0 Lollipop mobile operating system to their devices beginning April 7.
One M8 owners have been anticipating the update for quite some time now, especially with the announcement made last week that its predecessor as HTC's flagship smartphone, the One M7, received the upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop last week.
One M7 owners began to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update on March 31, with the rollout for the same upgrade to the One M8 appearing imminent at the time.
HTC VP of product management Mo Versi announced through a Twitter post that AT&T One M8 owners will be receiving the update on April 7 as the technical approval for Android 5.0 Lollipop for the smartphone has been received.
Android 5.0 Lollipop brings a host of new features compared to the previous version of Google's mobile operating system, including a new user interface for multitasking, redesigned notifications and the great-looking Material Design, which is Google's own design language.
However, there have been several reported issues associated with the installation of the Android 5.0 Lollipop mobile operating system on the One M8. Included in the reported problems are the freezing of the device, forced app shutdowns, decreased frame rates and lag. In addition, battery life has also decreased, despite the promise that the update will lengthen the life of the device's battery.
Now that Android 5.0 Lollipop is rolling out to the One M8 smartphone on AT&T, these issues may still be present. If so, then users will instantly start looking forward to the rollout of the next version of the operating system, Android 5.1 Lollipop.
Android 5.1 Lollipop looks to improve the stability, performance and battery life of devices on the new mobile operating system compared to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Most of the changes between Android 5.0 Lollipop and Android 5.1 Lollipop are under the hood, but there are several new features that can be found in the latest version of Android.
Included in the new features are Device Protection, a security feature, which functions similarly to Apple's Activation Lock, changes to quick settings, support for dual SIM devices and HD audio calls.
