Mortal Kombat X #14 Review: Fire And Ice

We all knew it was coming. For the last several issues, slowly but steadily a showdown has been brewing between Mortal Kombat's iconic yellow and blue ninjas. Now it's finally here, but does it deliver the epic battle we've all been waiting for?

Yes and no. The rivalry between Sub-Zero and Scorpion is one of the relationships that have come to define the game series. Two formidable warriors, one wielding the power of fire, the other, ice, have clashed numerous times over the course of the franchise's history.

Rest assured they don't resolve their issues peacefully here. But there is one twist to this encounter that separates it from the other times these two elemental fighters have faced - the kamidogu dagger.

Sub-Zero's powers have been amplified by the blood magic unleashed from the demonic dagger, making him more powerful than ever before. It's a flashy, albeit brief, fight, as Sub-Zero mocks Hanzo's attempt to shed his Scorpion persona. The action plays out much like it would in one of the Mortal Kombat games, as each fighter use a variety of their signature abilities to bloody effect.

But just as one battle concludes, another brews in Outworld, where Kotal Khan, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade prepare to defend against an approaching Shokan army. The trio debates plans of action, but even the best laid plans mean little when Goro's army arrives with some unexpected help.

This is all-around a solid issue, but it's hard not to feel like something is missing from this climactic clash. The fight between Sub-Zero and Scorpion doesn't look to be over quite yet. However, what is here in issue #14 isn't especially memorable. Over the past several issues the Outworld storyline has proved to be far more interesting and entertaining than Scorpion's quest to confront his old enemy. The motivations of Johnny, Kotal Khan and Sonya are more at the forefront, and the ramifications of Kotal Khan's previous actions are coming back into play in a big way. Scorpion's storyline, on the other hand, has primarily been wandering from one place to the next. Despite being billed as an "epic battle", Scorpion and Sub-Zero's duel is a little disappointing. Perhaps that will change next issue when the two ninja's finish their fight. For now, this battle didn't live up to the hype.
