Apple acknowledges selfie is here to stay, makes separate app category

If for some reason you believe the term selfie will eventually be forgotten, never to be heard of again, you're wrong. Apple surprised everyone by adding a selfie section in the App Store, which makes it easier for users to find the perfect selfie-related app, and proving once and for all that selfie is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

Selfie is an action where a person takes an image of himself or herself and uploads it to social networks. The term "selfie" was first mentioned on the Internet on Flickr back in 2004, but it took nearly a decade before the term was commercialized to the point where it is right now.

To make things even a lot more intriguing, the word selfie was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013 as "Word of The Year", which might have been the defining moment of the term. And, we're not surprised because popular celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres and even the Pope have taken a liking to the selfie craze.

At the moment, the number of apps available in the selfie section of the App Store is quite wanting. However, the big offer Facebook made for Snapchat and the rise of other selfie apps such as SnapDash, we expect the new category to be overrun by the end of the year if users continue to find interest in taking selfies.

We can see why Apple chose to create a category completely aimed at selfie apps. The term is popular; the apps are gaining popularity, which means Apple is one step ahead in having a place that is friendly to new developers working on a selfie app.

Then again, it is totally possible the selfie craze might dwindle in the coming months or even years, so it is not an absolute certain that Apple's plan to add a selfie category might turn out to be a great idea.

Time will tell if Google, Microsoft, or even BlackBerry will follow suit with a dedicated category for selfie apps in their respective app stores.
