Washington's power couple Frank and Claire Underwood are coming back to the small screen in Netflix's fourth season of its original award-winning TV show House of Cards.
Netflix confirmed on Twitter that it will begin production of season 4 this summer just in time for the premiere episode in 2016. The Emmy Award-winning TV show will bring back Kevin Spacey as the diabolical Mr. Underwood in his second term as President of the United States, while Robin Wright will reprise her role as Mrs. Underwood. Season 3 ended with Mr. Underwood running for re-election.
House of Cards, which is based on a BBC drama mini-series with the same title, is Netflix's most prominent original TV series since it debuted in 2013. Netflix does not release audience figures for its TV shows, but all three seasons of House of Cards have figured prominently in award-giving bodies.
In 2013, House of Cards won three Emmy Awards, including the Outstanding Director award for David Fincher. This was followed by a Best Actress in a TV series award at the Golden Globes for Wright in 2014 and the Golden Globe for Best Actor for Spacey in 2015.
House of Cards is one of many Netflix originals that were recently renewed, including award-winning Orange is the New Black, Marco Polo, Hemlock Grove, Bojack Horseman, Bloodline, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Season 1 of Marvel's Daredevil premieres on April 10 adding to the streaming network's lineup.
Netflix is planning to expand its services to a global audience and is rapidly seeking to include more original programming as more and more TV streaming services prove themselves worthy of competition. Research firm MoffettNathanson says Netflix is planning to spend more than $450 million on original programming this year, which is 88 percent up from last year's spending of $243 million.
The TV streaming service also announced a new TV series titled Montauk. Directed by brothers Matt and Ross Duffer and executive-produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and the Duffer brothers, Montauk is set in the 1980s in the Long Island resort town and revolves around the mysterious and sudden disappearance of a young boy.
"Matt and Ross are emerging filmmakers with an unmistakable passion for genre and suspense," said Netflix vice president of original content Cindy Holland. "Their unique voice infuses this coming-of-age drama with supernatural thrills that will captivate our global audience."
The Duffer brothers are known for their first feature film Hidden, which they directed for Warner Bros.
