The original Poltergeist is one of the greatest horror movies ever, and not just because of the ghosts: it's the crippling fear of a parent losing their child that makes the film so effective.
It's a fear that all parents share, and even the idea of losing a child to something out of one's control can be devastating.
Hopefully, the Poltergeist remake will hit those same notes - going by the film's second trailer, it could definitely happen.
At this point, it looks like the new Poltergeist will be a pretty straightforward remake of the original film.
That's not necessarily a bad thing: it's better to stick to the original material than to make something so different that it alienates fans.
However, this is one problem present within the film's trailers: they show off far too much. The original Poltergeist was relatively quiet (up until the end, at least) - so why do the trailers feel like some strange hybrid of ghost story and action flick?
It ruins the mystery of what will happen in the theaters: fans shouldn't go in knowing what each and every ghost looks like, that's the scary part!
Take a look at the new trailer below:
Obviously, there's no way to tell if the final product is going to be anything like the trailer or the original Poltergeist. There's a good chance that, if the remake sticks relatively close to the original script, it could be a great horror movie...but, if it ends up just like the trailers, it could be a huge letdown.
There isn't much longer before horror fans will get to find out for themselves: the Poltergeist remake is set to debut on May 22.
