Now that we've forgotten all about that Daredevil movie starring Ben Affleck, we're ready for the premiere of Netflix's new Daredevil series, which so far, looks relatively promising.
A new trailer for the new series released by Netflix shows us a bit more of Daredevil, along with other characters on the show. However, most importantly, this trailer introduces us to the idea of The Defenders, a superhero group from Marvel comics that fight crime, but are mostly outsiders with their own agendas.
This new trailer calls Daredevil (Matt Murdock) as "The First Defender," perhaps referencing Captain America's title as "The First Avenger."
There's also a mention of an iron suit (Iron Man) and a magic hammer (Thor), basically stating that Daredevil is just a guy in a mask.
The trailer also features a few other characters on the series, including Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll).
The first version of The Defenders included Doctor Strange, the Hulk, Namor and the Silver Surfer. However, the lineup regularly changed and eventually included Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, all who have upcoming Netflix series based on them. It's likely this means we'll see some crossover between series.
This trailer also shows us a Matt Murdock who hasn't yet come up with his signature red costume. In fact, according to the character here, "it's a work in progress."
In the Marvel comic, Murdock became Daredevil when a radioactive substance blinded him, enhancing his other senses. He started out his crime fighting career by seeking revenge against the men who killed his father. This earns him the nickname "The Man Without Fear."
So far, reviews of the series are good, meaning that this series is already off to a good start, or at least a better start than the film starring Affleck.
"The pulpy style and brutality (torture is one of Daredevil's tools) clearly seek a higher sense of realism, which must be balanced against the notion of a blind superhero who can shimmy up walls and whose spectacularly hearing lets him to function, among other things, as a human lie detector," writes Brian Lowry, Variety. "Helpfully, Cox brings the necessary mix of grit and Marvel-esque self-doubts to the dual role."
