Titanfall is the Xbox One's big game for the early part of 2014, but while many reviews paint a game that is a full fun multiplayer experience, Titanfall is not without its problems. So far, the game has been confirmed to run at 792p 60fps, instead of the so-called standard, 1080p/60fps.
Games running at 1080p/60fps are seen as the standard by console gamers, yet both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 have only a handful of AAA games running at the so-called standard requirement. However, if everything goes well, Microsoft could tick Titanfall as another AAA title on the list of full high definition games running at 60 frames per second on the Xbox One.
Richard Baker, lead designer at Respawn Entertainment, spoke with Eurogamer about the possibility of a future patch bringing Titanfall to the much talked about 1080p resolution. If not possible, then the developer might just bump it from 792p to 900p in the end.
"We've been experimenting with making it higher and lower. One of the big tricks is how much ESRAM we're going to use, so we're thinking of not using hardware MSAA and instead using FXAA to make it so we don't have to have this larger render target," Baker told Eurogamer.
"We're going to experiment. The target is either 1080p non-anti-aliased or 900p with FXAA. We're trying to optimise... we don't want to give up anything for higher res. So far we're not 100 percent happy with any of the options, we're still working on it. For day one it's not going to change. We're still looking at it for post-day one. We're likely to increase resolution after we ship."
Many video game related critics love to talk highly about 1080p on consoles, not realizing that full high definition matters more to PC gamers than console gamers. Usually, a PC gamer sits very close to the monitor where the game is being shown, while a console gamer would sit 10 feet away in a couch. Sitting 10 feet away from the TV means one would likely not see all the detail, especially if a particular game is fast moving and high on action.
Furthermore, 1080p mainly matters to console players with TV screens 50-inches and over. Unfortunately, we don't hear about much of this.
Time will tell if Respawn is able to hit the sweet spot that is 1080p/60fps, but as it stands now, gamers shouldn't keep their hopes up as it might never happen.
