Tales from the Borderlands: A sneak peek at SXSW

Telltale games has made a name for itself with high quality video game adaptations and spin-offs; and Tales from the Borderlands: A Telltale Games Series drives the point home.

The setting of the upcoming game happens after the events that unfolded in Borderlands 2 and the new game will showcase two new main characters. Unlike the Gearbox Software originals, Tales from Borderlands is more character driven and focuses on a more narrative take to the space western series. Aside from the new characters, familiar faces from Borderlands 2 also make appearances throughout the new title.

While the game's trailer was first seen back in the 2013 VGX awards show, a panel meeting at the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference brought to light more details about the game. The panel, which was called "Two Sides to Every Story - Tales from the Borderlands Unveiled at SXSW," featured a number of developers from Gearbox and Telltale. The developers delved into the storyline of Telltale's upcoming title.

Like other well known Telltale games, Tales from the Borderlands will be part of an episodic series. The panel discussed details about the game's two main protagonists Fiona and Rhys. The game is set in the same world as Borderlands and Borderlands 2. Unlike the original Borderlands games however, Tales from Borderlands puts the spotlight on the slightly more mundane residents of planet Pandora.

Fiona is a cunning con artist while Rhys is a cyborg arm totting employee of Hyperion and players will able to follow the unlikely pair as the plot thickens. While the story is told through the narrations of the main characters, more and more of Fiona and Rhys' untrustworthy personalities are revealed. Since the player can control both characters, it will be difficulty not to notice that each main character has their own version of the events that transpire throughout the game. These differences call into question the veracity of both Fiona and Rhys' accounts.

"You never really play what actually happened, you're playing this Big Fish version of what happened," said Kevin Bruner during the SXSW panel. Bruner is a developer from Telltale Games.

The SXSW discussed a lot of factors regarding the game's storyline but little was said about the game's mechanics. One of the few hints that was dropped during the panel indicate that certain parts of the game will have shooting segments. Moreover, Harrison Pink from Telltale also said a few words about each main character having a unique set of abilities.
