The Kentucky Wildcats Love To Play 'Super Smash Bros.' On The N64

By this point you've probably heard about how good the University of Kentucky men's basketball team is.

They are currently a number one seed in the NCAA tournament, have enjoyed an undefeated season and are far and away the favorite to become this year's national champions.

They also play a lot of Super Smash Bros. Not the new one, mind you. The old one. The original one, on the Nintendo 64, that released in 1999. Considering many of these players are as young as 18 or 19, they would have been young kids when the game originally released.

"I don't even remember playing it as a kid, that's how old it is," says sophomore Aaron Harrison in the video.

Turns out the men of Kentucky basketball like to kick it old-school, as a new episode of Kentucky Wildcats TV documents.

While the team is on the road and spending long periods of time in hotels, the team likes to pull up a few chairs and rotate in and out playing Nintendo's chaotic brawler. First and second place keep playing, third and fourth place rotate out.

So how did this all get started? One of the members of the team had an N64 in his room and began bringing it on the road. It began with just a few members of the team playing but slowly grew to include more members. Now around nine members of the 16 player team regularly settle it in Smash. As explained in the video, players on the team say the game helps them relax and take their mind off basketball for a while.

They say it's all for fun, but it's easy to tell in the video the players take their Smash seriously. According to other members of the team, senior guard Brian Long is the best player on the team, though EJ Floreal seems to be another skilled player among the group. His character of choice? Fox, which some of his teammates aren't exactly thrilled about.

It's a cool look behind the scenes at one of the most dominant forces in college basketball. Even though they may be some of the best basketball players in college hoops, that doesn't mean they can't have a little fun when they are off the court.
