Zombies and the undead are a hot commodity now, especially in Hollywood.
These putrid, rotting, and terrifying beings crawl in hordes across our TV screens every week, mostly just interested in eating our brains and turning us into zombies, too.
In fact, it seems that every time we turn around, there's yet another zombie TV series turning up in our living rooms.
However, with so many shows, it's tough to keep track of them all. It's even more difficult to keep track of which ones you can conveniently stream at your leisure. But hey, that's why we're here. We've got your guide right here to the best TV series about the undead that Internet streaming services have to offer.
So say your prayers, grab your axe and hide in your bunker, because the zombie apocalypse has arrived.
The Walking Dead
Of all the shows about the undead, The Walking Dead is probably the one most think of when they think about zombies. Based on the popular Image comic book series, this is the traditional zombie story: a deadly plague spreads through the world and turns people into zombies, leaving small groups of non-infected people doing what it takes to survive.
You can buy new episodes of The Walking Dead on services like iTunes, Vudu and Amazon, but if you're patient, Netflix has full seasons of the series for your binge-watching pleasure a year after they air.
Z Nation
A lot of people doubted that Syfy's zombie series Z Nation would be any good, but the series caught fans and critics by surprise by offering a show that isn't just dramatic, but also very funny. Z Nation is one of those shows that refuses to take itself seriously and has offered us everything from zombie babies to zombienados. This is the fun zombie series you watch to escape from the depression that watching The Walking Dead often leaves you with.
The first season of Z Nation is now up on Netflix.
iZombie
Turning the zombie story on its head, The CW's new series, iZombie, also based on a comic book series, gives us a young zombie woman who is smart and only eats the brains of the dead at the morgue where she works. Even more interesting, though, is that when she eats these brains, she sees flashes from those people's lives, usually leading her to the people who murdered them. If you're looking for a Veronica Mars meets The Walking Dead, this is the show you want to stream.
Lucky for us, new episodes of iZombie are available on Hulu Plus just a day after they air on live TV.
The Returned
One of the best French shows you may not have seen, The Returned (Les Revenants) takes us to a remote French village that is suddenly inundated with people coming back from the dead. The ambience and melancholy of the dramatic storytelling in this series will keep you on your seat, even while reading subtitles.
Although this show has an American version, the original is the one you want to see. And fortunately, it's on Netflix.
Resurrection
Although producers claim that Resurrection isn't a direct rip-off of The Returned, the premise is basically the same. In a small town in Missouri, people start returning from the dead. It's up to the people to investigate how and why this is happening.
Although similar to the other series, this one is still worth a watch on Hulu Plus.
The Fades
Although the BBC's The Fades not qualify technically as a zombie show, there are still plenty of undead in the series, those who have been prevented from passing on to their ascension. This makes them so mad that they've found a way to become corporeal again, giving them a way to exact vengeance on the mortal world and start the apocalypse.
This excellent series only got one season, but it's available in its entirety on Hulu Plus.
In The Flesh
Another excellent BBC series, In The Flesh tells us the story of dead people resurrected as zombies. Although the military hunted down most of the zombies, eventually doctors discovered a cure: a medication that gives consciousness to the undead that brings them back to who they were before they died. These people now live among mortals, with contacts, prosthetics and other devices to make them appear "normal," however they suffer from extreme prejudice and discrimination.
Unfortunately, you can't find this series on any of the regular streaming services. If you want to watch In The Flesh, individual episodes and full seasons are available for purchase on Amazon, Vudu, Google Play and iTunes.
