We've played hours of the Halo 5 multiplayer beta, but details on the game's single-player campaign have been scarce. We know Master Chief has left the UNSC behind and is being followed by Spartan Locke for unknown reasons — but other than that, the game's storyline is a complete mystery.
If a countdown clock on a Halo 5 promotional site is any indication, expect some answers to come soon. The Halo 5 Tumblr site Hunt the Truth features a timer ticking down to the afternoon of March 22 and also features a mysterious teaser trailer.
In the video, a sniper rifle fires a bullet with the word "Traitor" engraved into it. The bullet then smashes into the iconic helmet of the Master Chief, shattering it into thousands of pieces. That's... foreboding. Perhaps Spartan Locke isn't interested in bringing Master Chief home alive at all. Is this all one giant assassination mission? If so, good luck with that — the Master Chief doesn't die so easily. But why would the UNSC be out to kill humanity's greatest hero in the first place?
Spoilers for Halo 4 and wild Halo 5 speculation ahead!
It has been speculated that Master Chief is searching the universe for some way to bring back Cortana, who sacrifices herself to save the Chief at the end of Halo 4. One would then presume that Cortana would be absent in this go-around, but according to Spartan Locke actor Mike Colter, Cortana will have a role to play in the upcoming game. Whether that will be via flashback or resurrection is still up in the air.
That still doesn't explain why the UNSC would want Master Chief to die — even if he has gone rogue. We will just have to wait and see what the future has in store. Perhaps it's the rumored live-action trailer? Expect plenty of Halo 5 news once the countdown timer reaches zero.
