'God of War 3: Remastered' Headed To The PlayStation 4 This Summer

It might be hard to believe, but it's been 10 years since God of War made its debut back on the PlayStation 2. Looking back, it's easy to see why the game was such a hit - while other action games were focusing on exploration, God of War focused on combat and spectacle.

It was a roller coaster ride through Greek mythology, featuring one of the most unapologetically awesome protagonists ever made.

Now, a decade later, Sony is looking back on the franchise that solidified the PlayStation 2 as a legend in video game history: for the series' tenth anniversary, Sony is bringing one of Kratos' best games to the PlayStation 4.

As one of the biggest, prettiest games on the PlayStation 3, it's understandable why Sony Santa Monica would want to bring God of War 3 to Sony's newest console. When it game to presentation, God of War III was ahead of its time, and still looks amazing to this day. With a bit of polish and an upgrade to the PS4, God of War III: Remastered could be one of the best-looking games to ever grace Sony's console.

However, aside from a new photo mode that allows players to take and add filters to in-game screenshots, Sony hasn't really revealed anything new about God of War III: Remastered. There's a good chance that there could be extra modes, perhaps bonuses for gamers who played through the series on the PlayStation 3 - if there is, Sony isn't talking about it just yet. As it stands, God of War III: Remastered is a relatively straightforward port of the PS3 original.

One thing that does come off as a little strange is how the beginning of the teaser is edited: at first, it feels like Sony is building towards a PS4 God of War collection, only to reveal that the only game getting the update is God of War III. Not that a 1080p God of War III is a bad thing, but most fans of the franchise will cite other installments as their favorite - it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity for Sony to bring the entire franchise to the PlayStation 4, instead of a single installment at the end of the story.

God of War III was one of the biggest games of its time, and with the power of the PlayStation 4, Sony is looking to recapture that same magic. It'll be interesting to see if anything new gets added into the game before release. Then again, even if it's a vanilla port of the game, that's fine - who wouldn't want to rip a minotaur's head off in 1080p?

God of War III: Remastered is scheduled for release on July 14.
