Back in 2012, a little sci-fi adaptation called Dredd was released. Despite being a relatively small-budget film, it was great: it was the best interpretation of the Judge Dredd character ever put outside of the comics, its story was perfectly dystopian and it put writer Alex Garland on the map.
It didn't do very well at the box office, but it did gather a cult following rather quickly, and subsequent re-releases did relatively well.
Ever since its release, fans have been clamoring for a Dredd sequel - unfortunately, according to Garland himself, it's just not happening.
"There isn't, as far as I can tell, going to be a Dredd sequel. The basic mechanics of film financing say that if you make a film that loses a ton of money, you're not going to get a sequel. And that's basically what happened."
During an interview for his latest film, Ex Machina, Garland was asked about the possibility of Dredd 2 ever being made. Thanks to io9, fans now know why Dredd 2 will never see the light of day, but that doesn't make the situation any less depressing.
"So the support for the film is truly appreciated. But if there is going to be a sequel, it's not going to be me and the team of people who worked on the previous film, it's going to be another bunch of people. And good luck to them, and I hope it happens. I really do. I hope they do a better job than we did."
While Garland himself doesn't seem to think the film did well, it's actually quite the opposite: Dredd is currently sitting at a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a far better score than most sci-fi movies receive these days. The film also has a loyal fanbase, and in this day and age, that alone is noteworthy.
So, in the end, this doesn't mean the end of the Dredd franchise as a whole - just one of the best parts of it.
