According to an annual ranking of car insurance rates prepared by Insure.com, the most expensive 2015 model car to take out an insurance for in the United States is the Nissan GT-R Nismo.
The GT-R Nismo will cost its owners an average annual premium of $3,574 for insurance coverage, which will add to the already steep cost of the vehicle that sells for $150,000.
The GT-R Nismo has a limited edition status, with only around 50 units sold in the United States per year. The vehicle also has components made out of carbon fiber, which are hard to source. Nissan spokesman Dan Bedore, however, added that the maintenance for the vehicle is more expensive than the insurance that is being paid for it.
According to Insure.com analyst Penny Gusner, the higher insurance rates on more expensive vehicles are due to higher repair costs. In addition, cars built for speed such as the 600-horsepower GT-R Nismo, the 621-horsepower Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG and the 645-horposewer Dodge SRT Viper will be tested by owners every once in a while to reach the promised top speeds of the cars. This means that the owners of these vehicles are more prone to being involved in crashes compared to owners of family vehicles.
The three aforementioned vehicles take up the top three spots of Insure.com's top 10 list of most expensive cars to take out an insurance for, with the complete list as follows:
- Nissan GT-R Nismo - $3,574
- Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG - $3,573
- Dodge SRT Viper - $3,318
- Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet - $3,216
- Audi R8 5.2 Spyder Quattro - $3,206
- Porsche Panamera Turbo Executive - $3,174
- BMW 760Li - $3,147
- BMW M6 Convertible - $3,115
- Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG 4Matic Wagon - $3,042
- Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG 4Matic - $2,972
Insure.com's rankings were based on the national premium average for a total of 1,522 vehicles with the 2015 model year, with the owner being held constant as a 40-year-old man with a good credit record. The prices were acquired from six major insurance companies, namely Allstate, Geico, Progressive, State Farm, Nationwide and Farmers.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the least expensive car to take out an insurance for is the Jeep Wrangler Sport of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, with an annual average premium of only $1,134. The Jeep Patriot Sport came in second and Honda's CR-V LX SUV came in third.
Gusner said that the vehicles that require the cheapest insurance are those that are easy to repair, have a lower number of claims compared to other vehicles, or both.
