Emoji are so mainstream these days. Everyone has at least one friend that tries to communicate solely using the little symbols whether the person on the receiving end of the message understands him or her or not.
However, as commercial as emoji are these days, there's still potential for them to be used in more avant-garde and artistic ways. The celebrity portraits created by artist and rapper Yung Jake using emoji went viral a couple of months ago. There's apparently so much art made with emoji that there was a whole exhibition dedicated to it in New York back in December 2013.
But a new 3-D animation test created by computational artist and creative technologist Albert Omoss is one of the most beautiful pieces of art using emoji you'll see on the Internet. The less-than-a-minute clip shows the emoji bursting on the screen like an explosion. This soon gives way to the emoji splashing around like a puddle of water, which is strangely soothing. It's as hypnotic as staring at a lava lamp. Trippy, man.
As Gizmodo explains, animators perform particle tests like this as a way to make real-world actions look authentic when they become computer generated. "Complex physical interactions are simulated to create intricate scenes like crowds of people, spilling liquid, or explosions," according to Gizmodo.
If you're a fan of this video, Omoss also created a video called "Emoji Birth," which is exactly what it sounds like in all its NSFW glory. Apparently, this clip is "For those who thought the other video was too mainstream," so watch at your own risk. Who knew emoji could be so subversive?
