Verizon and LG go small (er) with the LG G Pad 8.3 LTE tablet

LG and Verizon have announced the carrier will exclusively offer the LG G Pad 8.3 LTE beginning on March 6 online and in its retail stores.

In 2011 Steve Jobs famously said that Apple would not release a smaller iPad to compete with 7-inch Android tablets because the 9.7-inch display on the iPad was the minimum size required to create great tablet apps. Steve Jobs would often dismiss competing products as failures until Apple magically figured out how to make the experience better and enter that market.

Apple figured it out and the company launched the first-generation iPad mini in 2012 and despite its lack of Retina display; customers were buying the smaller iPad by the millions. Its latest iPad mini with Retina display has made the smaller iPad an even bigger hit and LG clearly had its sights set on the iPad mini when it designed its powerful 8.3-inch LG G Pad 8.3, complete with a premium feeling aluminum case and thin-bezel display.

Verizon and LG have announced the LG G Pad 8.3 LTE will be an exclusive to the carrier's network. The Verizon LG G Pad 8.3 offers users a solidly built, thin and light tablet that also benefits from LG's software enhancements. The Q Pair App links and syncs the LG G Pad 8.3 LTE with Android smartphones to receive alerts of incoming calls, respond to text messages and more. Its QSlide feature is its multitasking feature, which places two windows that float on top of the screen and can be adjustable in both size and transparency.

Verizon will begin offering the LG G Pad 8.3 LTE on March 6 and to kick off its launch, the carrier will offer the tablet for $99.99 when signing a new two-year contract from March 6 through March 10. After March 10, the LG G Pad 8,2 LTE will be priced at $199.99 with a new 2-year activation.

"Tablets have become a key focus for consumers seeking riveting entertainment experiences and a go-to form factor for users who require a larger device that doesn't sacrifice power for portability," said Morris Lee, senior vice president and head of North American sales and marketing, LG Mobile Communications Company. "With its big clear display and an easy-to-hold form-factor, the LG G Pad 8.3 LTE on Verizon Wireless is perfect for personal use or entertaining a group of friends, family or colleagues."

The Verizon LG G Pad 8.3 LTE features a 8.3-inch Full HD IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and a pixel density of 273 pixels per inch (ppi). It's powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, and 2GB of RAM to provide a fast and fluid user interface. It ships with 16GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot that will support up to 64GB microSD cards.

Its camera capabilities include an 8-megapixel-rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat and selfies. In terms of wireless connectivity you'll find a 4G LTE radio, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.0. The tablet ships with a large 4,600 mAh battery.

For those not looking to sign a two-year contract with Verizon for the LG G Pad 8.3 LTE, it will offer the tablet for $299.99 off-contract.
