It's easy to get lost in an IKEA. I mean, who hasn't walked by a sofa and thought to themselves, "I have definitely passed that EKTORP before," am I right?
IKEA's maze-like atmosphere is perfect for two things: keeping you in the store way longer than anticipated so that you buy more stuff and an awesome game of hide-and-seek. Guess which one the Swedish furniture giant doesn't want you to do?
That's right. IKEA recently put the kibosh on a massive hide-and-seek game planned for some of its locations in the Netherlands, Bloomberg Business reported. Tens of thousands of people signed up on Facebook to participate in hide-and-seek games in IKEA's Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Utrecht stores. However, IKEA has now banned the events from those stores due to safety concerns. The organizers are now apparently looking for other locations to hold their hide-and-seek games.
"It's hard to control," IKEA Group spokeswoman Martina Smedberg told Bloomberg Business. "We need to make sure people are safe in our stores and that's hard to do if we don't even know where they are."
As unfortunate as this is for the organizers and participants, it seems likely that they will find another way to play hide-and-seek in IKEA, seeing as how there's a lot of support for the activity out there. Playing hide-and-seek at IKEA is actually a thing, you guys. Last July, hundreds of people joined 29-year-old Elise De Rijck in a game of hide-and-seek at the IKEA in Wilrijk, Belgium after the store granted her permission to host the game, which was on her list of 30 things to do before her 30th birthday. There are also several Facebook pages dedicated to playing hide-and-seek in IKEA, some of which even have events planned for the future. Well, for now at least.
