Hyundai Recalls Genesis Luxury Sedan Due To Gear Selector Problem

After issuing a recall for its Elantra and Elantra Touring vehicles, Hyundai is now set to recall its luxury sedan, owing to issues with the gear selector.

Per a NHTSA filing by the company, Hyundai is recalling nearly 26,000 of its Genesis luxury sedans in both the U.S. and Canada as the rear lamp of the vehicles may be affected by a possible water leak. The leak could lead to unforeseen issues for users, such as shifting troubles, the incorrect gear showing up on the display of the instrument panel or delay in swapping from one gear to the other.

To illustrate, a user hits the gear selector with "Drive" but the vehicle prompts into "Reverse" action, owing to faulty transmission on the instrument panel.

Nearly 24, 000 cars affected are in the U.S., whereas those remaining are in Canada.

According to Hyundai, the problem area is possibly a bad seal in the rear light assembly of the Genesis 2015 model, which lets water enter and in turn causes issues with the switch. What is alarming is that the malfunctioning switch could be instrumental in wreaking havoc.

Not only can wrong gears show up on the instrument panel, but warning lights turn on and the delay while shifting gears is worrisome.

Hyundai was alerted of the issue when an owner of its Genesis 2015 model complained of water permeating into the rear light assembly, which led to the vehicle getting stuck in park mode. Another owner of the luxury sedan complained that the water was causing the deferred gear engagements.

According to the company, government documents say that an incorrect gear can heighten the risk of a vehicle moving unpredictably, which could lead to a crash.

At this juncture it is not known if the Genesis 2015's gear selector issue has resulted in any car crashes.

Hyundai's car recall affects Genesis models that were built between Feb. 21, 2014 and Jan. 24, 2015. Dealers have been notified to install special pads that will stop the water from filtering into the rear light assembly. The pads will be installed free of charge for owners.

Hyundai is expected to notify Genesis owners post April 1.
