Here's Your First Look At Supergirl's Costume

Since Glee and Whiplash star Melissa Benoist was cast as Supergirl in CBS' upcoming drama, the world has been waiting to see what she would look like taking on that iconic blue suit and red cape. We finally have our answer.

CBS and Warner Bros. TV released the first images of Benoist as the titular character just as production on the pilot episode has begun. And might I just say she looks pretty badass.

The darker, more muted mesh-textured outfit of the new Supergirl costume looks to be in a similar style as the one actor Henry Cavill wore as Superman in the 2013 reboot Man of Steel. This look is quite a departure from the Supergirl in the comics, who has long, blonde hair and wears a bright blue, midriff-revealing, long-sleeved top and flouncy skirt. Benoist's costume is also not as playful as Helen Slater's Supergirl costume in the 1984 big-screen adaptation. She is also noticeably wearing stockings underneath her thigh-high boots. It looks like CBS' Supergirl show will have less camp and more edge.

Supergirl's costume was designed by three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, who also designed the suits for The Flash and Arrow.

"In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today," Atwood said in a statement, as reported by E! News.

Supergirl follows the life of 24-year-old Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, after she escaped destruction on the planet Krypton and has been living on Earth for a few years. Now she will begin honing her powers to become the Supergirl we all know and love.

There's been a lot of news out of the world of Supergirl recently. Last week it was announced that former Supergirl Slater and former Superman Dean Cain will also be guest starring on the series. They joined a cast that already included Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Laura Benanti as Kara's mother Alura Zor-El, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw and Chyler Leigh as Kara's foster sister Alex Danvers. We're all obviously excited to see what all of these character will look like on the show too.
