Consumer Reports has named the Tesla Model S as the best overall vehicle cruising on the road today.
The electric car produced by Tesla Motors has topped more than 260 vehicles tested by Consumer reports. It is also the first time that the sporty, green car has been named winner on the popular list. In order to pick the winner, the non-profit organization has set a strict criteria in terms of performance, reliability, and safety.
"Sure, you can talk about this electric luxury car's blistering acceleration, razor-sharp handling, compliant ride, and versatile cabin, which can fit a small third-row seat. But that just scratches the surface of this technological tour de force," Consumer Reports described its top pick among 2014 model year vehicles.
"The Tesla is brimming with innovation. Its massive, easy-to-use 17-inch touch screen controls most functions. And with its totally keyless operation, full Internet access, and ultra-quiet, zero-emission driving experience, the Tesla is a glimpse into a future where cars and computers coexist in seamless harmony. Its 225-mile driving range and 5-hour charges, using Tesla's special connector, also make it the easiest, most practical, albeit pricey, electric car to live with," it added.
The organization picked the Subaru Forester as its best small SUV; the four-cylinder Honda Accord for the midsized sedan category; the Subaru Impreza as the best compact car; the Hyundai Santa Fe as the top midsized SUV; Toyota Prius as the best green car; the Ram 1500 as the top pickup truck; Audi A6 as best luxury car; the BMW 328i as best sports sedan; and the Honda Odyssey as the top minivan.
The Santa Fe and the Forester made it for the first time in the list. The same is true for the Ram 1500 pickup that became the first model of Chrysler in sixteen years to be included on the list.
The BMW 328i and the Audi A6 ruled their respective categories for the second consecutive year.
"The competition in the marketplace has grown fierce. There was a time when a handful of brands dominated our Top Picks list, but in recent years we've seen a more diverse group make the cut," said Consumer Reports' automotive editor Rik Paul.
The testing procedure of Consumer Reports is considered as among the most comprehensive among publications in the United States. During the evaluation process, each vehicle is subjected to more than 50 tests that will challenge different aspects such as braking, comfort, handling, safety, fuel economy, and convenience.
Meanwhile, reports have surfaced and have been confirmed that Tesla Motors chief executive Elon Musk met with Apple's top brass. The details of possible partnership or purchase have not been disclosed.
