Connectivity and exclusivity are strong bedfellows as we descend deeper into the 21st century. To celebrate such an intriguing blending of mediums, IMAX, the widely used cinema projection system for special-venue film presentations, is offering a custom-built home experience for wealthy cinephiles.
Created by Canadian company IMAX Corporation and developed by Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, Robert Kerr and William C. Shaw, IMAX has showcased a distinctive ability to display images of far greater size and resolution than its predecessors. With 837 theaters in 57 countries, IMAX has earned the title of "ultimate movie experience" for over the past decade.
According to The Independent, the company unveiled its plan for the Private Theatre system, which would build cinematic installations in a domestic setting. The IMAX experience installed in homes across the globe is not going to cost lightly at all. An asking price of £1.8 million (roughly $2.8 million USD) gets purchasers everything custom-created by IMAX HQ.
From the company’s world renowned 4K projector system to a dynamic floor-to-ceiling screen, IMAX is offering everything one needs to have the best and most comfy theater on the block. The cost isn't just about the installation, but it also covers training on how to operate the complicated IMAX theater design. Movie fans with deep pockets are guaranteed five-year maintenance service, "24/7/365" real-time, around-the-clock service that allows IMAX to tweak issues remotely.
In addition to all that, the IMAX Private Theatre also comes pre-loaded with 200 movies, including the biggest IMAX movie releases from the past seven years. There’s no word if Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron will be one of those films included, but with four inputs that allow 2D and 3D content, lovers of cinema should have a lot of films from which to choose.
Besides having the dough to pull this off, one must also have a room that can accommodate a 10-foot tall screen, plus space for a booth to house the projectors. It is interesting to note that the IMAX Private Theatre can be designed to be bigger than 10-feet tall, as the prototype 15-seater model can be scaled to a size of 12 x 22.5 x 41 feet.
With no signs of a more affordable option coming to the U.S. or Europe anytime soon, IMAX HQ has already announced plans to take its Private Theatre to China later this year.
