For whatever reason, the latest console generation started with only a fraction of the apps that were available on their older counterparts.
For months, basic apps like YouTube just weren't available on the Xbox One or PlayStation 4. Of course, as the months went by, more and more apps made their way to the next generation of consoles one by one...except for HBO Go.
The Xbox One version of HBO Go launched a few months back, but PlayStation 4 owners have been left out since the console's launch - which was over a year ago. Having to switch between consoles or devices just to get to HBO Go is a major pain - thankfully, that's in the past: HBO Go is finally coming to the PlayStation 4, and there's no wait involved.
The PlayStation 4 version of the app will launch later today, and Sony fans with experience using the PS3 version of HBO Go will be able to jump right in and start streaming.
The app functions almost identically to the PlayStation 3 version: once you sign into your device and download HBO Go, but you'll need to validate your subscription through HBO's dedicated website. Once that's done, you're basically set to go, and all of HBO's programming and movies will be right at your fingertips.
There's no telling why it took so long for the app to make its way to Sony's machine. If it works so similarly to the PlayStation 3 version, surely it couldn't have taken much to port the app from one console to the other? Granted, there could have been some technical hiccup or limitation that prevented an easy transfer, but it probably shouldn't have taken more than a year either way.
In the end, it's just nice to finally have HBO Go playing on the PlayStation 4!
