Leonard Nimoy, who became a science fiction icon with his portrayal as Mr. Spock on the original Star Trek TV series, passed away today at the age of 83 after battling with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
While Star Trek made him famous, Nimoy would go on to provide his voice and likeness for movies, video games and television shows throughout his career, along the way writing two autobiographies and releasing multiple music albums. He would once again don the pointed ears of Spock in the Star Trek reboot from director J.J. Abrams, where an older Spock would help a new, young crew of the USS Enterprise find their way.
Helping people find their way was something Nimoy seemed to have a talent for, even if unintentionally. Millions of science fiction fans look up to Nimoy as a hero and to his character of Spock as a role model to be followed. In his later years he overcame his addiction to smoking and became an outspoken advocate against the practice, offering kind words for those struggling to overcome addictions of their own.
It's no surprise then that as news of his death began to spread across the globe that thousands of friends, family and fans took to social media to pay their respects. Live long and prosper, Mr. Spock.
