Eddie Redmayne proved his incredible acting abilities, giving an award-winning performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, which earned him his first Oscar. Fresh off the big Best Actor win, Redmayne is getting buzz for his next potential award-winning role.
Redmayne will play a transgender role in the film The Danish Girl.
Set in the 1880s in Denmark, Redmayne's role is based on the true story of Lili Elbe, (born Einar Wegener) one of the first people to have a sex reassignment surgery.
"The danger of surgery was so extreme then [in the 1920s]," Redmayne said. "It's such a brave thing that Einar did."
In the first role since The Theory of Everything, the Oscar winner is working with movement coach Alexandra Reynolds, who previously helped him mimic the movements of Hawking. He is also reaching out to the trans community to further research the role.
"We're looking at everything from a feminine perspective," he said. "I think it's the most sensitive role I have played."
The first photo of his portrayal shows Redmayne wearing red lipstick with a red wig. Looking totally committed to the role, there is an intensity in Redmayne's eyes. The image alone goes to show that Redmayne can transform himself to play just about any part—and look amazing doing so.
While many may wonder why a trans actress wasn't cast for the role, Redmaybe said that while there are many talented people the role could have went to, hormones played a role in the casting decision.
"But one of the complications is that nowadays you have hormones, and many trans women have taken hormones," he said. "But to start this part playing male you'd have to come off the hormones, so that has been a discussion as well. Because back in that period there weren't hormones."
Alicia Vikander is cast to play Gerda Wegener, Elbe's wife, an artist who used painted Wegener in drag and stood by her throughout her journey.
Based on the book by David Ebershoff The Danish Girl will be directed by Tom Hopper, who directed Les Miserables, which also featured Redmayne.
The Danish Girl is expected to be released in 2016.
