'Doctor Who' Comic Will Feature Three-Doctor Crossover Story

Doctor Who fans are in for a real treat later this year. Not only will the series return to television sets with a new season, but the Doctor Who comic books are getting a multi-Doctor story arc written by fan favorite writer Paul Cornell.

Titan Comics announced the new five-part comic book storyline today that will feature the 10th, 11th and 12th incarnations of the Doctor. This will be the first time that all three Doctors have seen a story together.

The story begins in August and runs through September, which each issue seeing a weekly release. It will replace the separate issues for Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor, Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor and Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor.

This release comes just a month after Titan Comics' Doctor Who Day, which takes place on July 26. The celebration includes signings, giveaways and contests in the U.S., U.K. and online to promote the release of Titan's first issues of the Doctor Who comics. The series was previously published by IDW Comics until Titan took it over last year.

Titan also plans to host contests at this year's San Diego Comic Con. Comic book stores participating in the promotion will offer a 32-page sample issue with previews of Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor.

Titan is currently tight-lipped about the story featured in the multi-Doctor storyline, as well as the artist for the series, but did announce that Cornell was taking the helm as writer for the project. Cornell is best known for writing three critically and fan acclaimed episodes of the Doctor Who television series, "Father's Day," "Family of Blood" and "Human Nature." Cornell also wrote the comic book The Girl Who Loves Doctor Who, which saw a nomination for a Hugo Award. He's also a favorite at conventions, including the recent Gallifrey One event held in Los Angeles.

"Can you imagine me getting through the world's premiere Doctor Who convention without letting that news slip out?" writes Cornell on his blog "I'm delighted, and there's a stellar artist lined up too, and their companions will be onboard, and... well, that's all I can say right now. Except: wa-hey!"

Cornell will also be featured in a series of novellas by Tor books to be released in September.

The first issue of the crossover multi-Doctor story will be released on August 12. Titan will also release the first issue of its much-anticipated five-part Ninth Doctor series next month.
