Justice League #39 Review: Wonder Woman Vs. The Justice League

When we last saw Superman, Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor, they had their backs against a wall. The infected, zombie-like Justice League was closing in and there was little time.

It's here where Justice League #39 picks up for what becomes a very Wonder Woman-focused issue. Diana takes on the League (almost) by herself, buying time for Superman and Lex Luthor to develop a cure for the Amazo virus.

After the twists and turns of last issue, where we saw Batman become infected and develop superpowers, this issue is a little more predictable. Wonder Woman clashes with her former comrades while Lex and Superman squabble as they work towards a solution.

It's a fairly straightforward issue that makes for some solid action. Artist Jason Fabok's depictions of Wonder Woman in motion are fluid and easy to follow, with Diana leaping behind her opponents and shield-slamming Aquaman into next week. It's definitely nice to see Wonder Woman given the opportunity to shine.

But she isn't all alone. Captain Cold, still employed by Lex Luthor, steps in to help fight as well. The conversation the unlikely duo share in the middle of battle serves as one of the issue's high points and continues to prove that maybe Captain Cold isn't such a bad guy after all.

While writer Geoff Johns does manage to wrap up the arc neatly before heading into next month's "Darkseid War" storyline, there are still a few mysteries for fans to ponder as we wait for the next issue. The Amazo Virus briefly gifted those infected with random superpowers before eventually killing the host. Now that a cure is out in the wild, it's revealed that some of the victims have retained their powers after being cured. It leaves the door open for tons of new superheroes and villains to make their way into the DC universe and is the biggest takeaway from the arc as a whole.

Issue #39 serves as a satisfying, if somewhat predictable, conclusion to the "Amazo Virus" arc and sets the stage for what is sure to be one of the biggest Justice League storylines yet. With a creative team like Johns and Fabok at the helm, it's hard not to be excited for the return of Darkseid.
